The Future of Libraries: Be There or be Square

I read all of the OCLC librarian's perspectives and I think we should keep habit number six from the 7 1/2 Habits of Successful Lifelong Learners in mind when we plan for the future of libraries. Using technology to our advantage is a great way to ensure our patron's loyalty and keep libraries from becoming stale, dusty old book repositories. I had a patron the other day who told me he only came in to get a library card because he noticed we had Rosetta Stone on our website. He said he would never have come in if it weren't for the fact you need a library card to use it. Later when he came up to the desk with several books, DVD's and a couple of music Cd's he told me he didn't realize we had so much "good stuff "in the library nowadays. Score one new patron for the home team! Give them what they want and they will come.
They might even come back for more if they feel comfortable enough. Sure, they can stay home and use their computers; but it's much more fun to get out of the house and browse with a group of other people. The best part is, if you need help, ask a librarian. I really don't think we should fret too much about our future. I doubt that technology will put libraries out of business. People will always seek the friendly solace of our hallowed halls. If anything, the more we know about what the people want the better we will be at filling that need. Take a look at the at the following blog for an off-beat look at the future of libraries:
